Preparing for a career. unit 24- p1-p6.

Introduction:

In this Unit I will be talking about and creating a pathway in the long term. I will also be showing the process of my application for an apprenticeship step by step.

p1- pathway Post 18- opportunities.

High Education:  Higher education is education at universities or similar education establishments, especially to degree level. University is at degree/master level and there are a wide variety of courses that you can study significant to what you'd like to do. For example for media courses you can study are: BA (Bachelor of arts degree), BSc (Bachelor of Science), Theoretical and analytical degree exploring the role of media and culture in society.

With choices in Uni, there comes pros and cons within. Pros: - Qualified employees are paid more than none qualified colleagues with graduates accepting management training positions in various organisations. - You don't have to pay your fee back until you earn over £21,000. - Higher chance of getting a job. Cons: - If you choose the wrong degree, you have a large debt with no prospects and/or you may have to gain a further debt to retrain. - University living costs are high for example: £130 a week to live in a flat.

Gap Year:  A gap year is a period, typically an academic year, taken by a student as a break between schools and universities or college education. Some students take a period of time out of education to go travelling or to go into work full time or voluntarily to gain more experience before they go back into education. *For student to take a luxury gap year out of education would cost £5,000 which isn't cheap at all, but alternatively you could use a gap year to earn up to £12,000 and gain a lot of work experience which would give you more maturity.* Regardless to the options, students can decide on what they wish to do when they leave education post 18. With a gap year comes pros and cons.

Pros: - There's an opportunity to regroup and rediscover. After being in school for several years, you can feel burnt out. Going to university while you aren't in top shape mentally will only lead to poor performance. You deserves some well earned rest and relaxation. - Most students take their year off to travel. - Some students also take the opportunity to work. The money saved up from working is put towards the future for example: a home, a car or an education. - It's the time to pursue other passions. Cons: - Students may lose momentum. - If students choose to travel during a gap year it can take a huge financial toll*. - To truly make your student experience worthwhile, a lot of planning is involved.

Workplace: A workplace is where people work, such as an office or factory. Students who leave school (Post 16) can go straight into a working industry of their choice for example; media related work. They can go into freelance which is where they do their own work, editing, find a client to work with of their own. As an alternative, students can work voluntarily which again can help build up confidence and experience that they can take with them in the future or they can work full time. In the working place there comes pros and cons. Pros in freelance working: - Choice and variety. The ability to choose clients, topics and project to appeal to those of us who want to work on certain topics or fields. Cons in freelance working: - Separation of work and home. Pros in voluntary work: - If you are bit currently job hunting, it is always a good idea to keep networking to expand your opportunity for future work. Cons in voluntary work: - As a student, you need to make sure you have enough time and energy to volunteer. Pros in full-time work: - Full-time employees typically have a steady income and work about 40 hours per week. Cons in full-time work: - A full-time job makes it difficult to handle family obligations.

Apprenticeships: An apprenticeship is a system of training a new generation and it is allows apprentices to earn a wage while also gaining knowledge. When students finish school from Year 11 or Post 16 there's an option open to do an apprenticeship if they so wished to do. They don't have to, but there's that door open. If they are studying media or interested in media there are thousands of media apprenticeships that are available for example: - Social and Digital Media, Creative Skills set.

- Marketing/Design Admin Apprentices, Right Track Social Enterprise. - Digital Marketing Apprentice, Arch. These are just some of the media apprenticeships out of thousands that are available. Also, apprenticeships go up and on levels for different courses you'd like to do from Intermediate (Level 2) to Degree (Level 6&7). In-between Intermediate and Degree is, Advanced and Higher (Level 3 and Level 4,5,6,7). Of course with apprenticeships there comes pros and cons, what's good and what isn't too good. Pros: - Apprenticeships are debt free so, no need to stress about debt.

- Apprentices learn on the job, building the knowledge up and skills, gaining and earning money alkl at the same time. Students who choose an apprenticeship can work towards a work-bases qualification such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) which is recognised by employers all over the country. - The average wage for an apprenticeship is £6.75 per hour. Cons: - Apprenticeships can be temporary depends on the Level/qualification you've applied for. - Some students might feel overwhelmed at first. Your employer will have deadlines to meet and clients to please. - You can't always gain access to a certain career through an apprenticeship. - Apprenticeships are paid, but the minimum wage is £3.40 per hours.

p2 & p3- swot;Word cloud:

To help me understand my personal skills I decided to create a SWOT analysis of the words that would describe me the most. This exercise helped me uncover my strengths and weaknesses.

S- Strengths.                                                                      W- Weaknesses.

- Boomsatsuma: Helping me get on track to where I want to go.

-

-

- Competition: Through school people are always going to be better.

- Location: Isn't easy to get to or recognise if never seen it before.

- Supply and demand: Things now a days demand something and you've got to give.

- Laughter: Again, I think it's a threat because, I don't know when to stop.

word cloud:

Achievements and Awards:

- NCS; I completed a 4 week programme in which I graduated from at the end.

- Cadets; I've received 2 medals (Gold and Silver) from 'Wing Athletics', 1st in 100m sprint and 2nd in 1500m and  1 medal from Wing Cross Country.

Life experiences and interests:

- Back in January a small group of us took part at the 'Raising Aspirations' event for 2 days in which we filmed and interviews people throughout the day. I was the team manager during the day and I also went up on stage and spoke in front of 4,000 people about what I wanted to do after Post 16, my pathway post 18.

- I used to go to Stage coach every Saturday when  I was 9 to 11 and then I left to go to another theatre school, 'Razzmatazz' from the age of 11- 17. Still going every Saturday with helping in the morning over at Keynsham and attending my afternoon session as a student up to July 2017. I've now left theatre school as a student, but I will be going back as staff. I ended my student days on a high performing and the Bristol Hippodrome and was awarded 'Student of the year'.

What resources do I have to help me get there?

To reach the pathway I want to go down, I've gone into the different resources that I need to help me and they are:

-Family and Friends advice; I can receive support from them and get their opinions on the path I want to go down. They know what's best for me, as well as I know.

-CLF and Boomsatsuma Staff; The staff at CLF and Boomsatsuma have given many resources over two years in Sixth Form. I've had opportunities to go to an Apprenticeship and University event to help me find the right place to go to start up my career.

- Apprenticeship GOV.UK website; They have a wide variety of apprenticeships in the subject I want to go to. So media related apprenticeships including, film and media studies.

p4- my personal plan:

I have chosen a career path as a director and I have searched into   my career and where it will start and the direction it will hopefully go. I've also looked up the career requirements and this is what I found; I should really follow this of course, but if an opportunities arises it may go different. These are things to consider when pursuing my path.

1st and 2nd year: During the first few years, I will take up an apprenticeship in film working on the course I have picked to carry out, getting more information and stance on different techniques that are taught throughout. It will give me more confidence on my knowledge and actions on how to go about a task. I will take up every opportunity that is given my way. I won't ever miss an opportunity, the more experience the better.

3rd year:  Depending on how long the apprenticeship I take, I will either still continue it or start finishing it. If still continuous, I will start contacting industries to see what's going on and if there's anything I could maybe get involved in more. I'm sure the first few years will be contacting, but I would want to know, see and find out more. If finishing, start applying for university degrees in film and work my way to that, carry all my knowledge over and start up trying to earn a degree.

4th year: Continue earning my degree in film, bulk up contacts and more experience because you can't have enough experience. See if there's any more gigs I could get myself on in terms of working with professional directors, working and producing work for them or with them.

5th year: Carry on further education, earn my degree (finally), graduate and become a director!

Looking at the pathway I want to take to become a director, I also look at my threats and weaknesses that could get in my way. One of my threats throughout the process of being where I'd like to be is competition and there will always be more and better people heading for the same role, it will just be like a lucky dip, best person gets it. A weakness that I have picked up also is negativity. Negativity isn't the best of things to have when heading into any career, but it arises and it's sometimes hard coming out from that unless told otherwise, well for me anyways. Negativity is a barrier for me because, if I'm doing something I don't also think it's to the maximum it could be. I in effect put myself down and I don't think I'm that good at things I do.

p5- what I need for my application.

Curriculum Vitae.

There a different materials I need for my application for an apprenticeship I would like to undertake when I leave Post 16. So I have attached apprenticeship requirements that say what apprenticeships look for in an apprentice and the levels needed to get in. I have also attached my CV that I have created. My CV has information about school, where I went, what I am interested in, a bit about me and grades I have achieved.

p6- portfolio.

I have created a separate page with my final pieces and outcomes to show to employers the skills I have within myself that I have learnt throughout the duration of 'Creative Media' so far.
